Optimising Ventilation Through Positioning

Presented by Dr Mikuláš Mlček, Ph.D. and Dr Michal Otáhal, Ph.D. (First Faculty of Medicine, Charles University, Czech Republic)

This interactive session explores how patient positioning directly influences lung mechanics, ventilation distribution, and ventilator-induced lung injury. Using real-time monitoring and live demonstration, presenters will show how targeted lateral positioning, combined with ventilation adjustment, can reduce overdistension and atelectasis. Walk away with practical, physiology-driven strategies for personalised lung optimisation at the bedside.

About the Presenters

Dr Mikuláš Mlček, Ph.D. is Head of the Institute of Physiology at the First Faculty of Medicine, Charles University in Prague. He is an internationally recognised clinician-scientist specialising in critical care physiology, haemodynamics, cardiogenic shock and extracorporeal life support, with a strong focus on individualised ICU care and data-driven clinical decision-making.

Dr Michal Otáhal, Ph.D. is a senior intensivist at the Department of Anesthesiology, Resuscitation and Intensive Care Medicine, First Faculty of Medicine, Charles University and General University Hospital in Prague. His clinical focus includes airway management, resuscitation and acute intensive care, with a strong interest in translating physiology, monitoring and technology into safer, more effective daily ICU practice.
